721 runs for no loss in 40 overs!!!!

Manoj Kumar and Md Shaibaz Tumbi of St Peter’s High School were involved in an unbroken opening partnership of 721 runs in the Hyderabad Cricket Association’s under-13 cricket league championship

Hyderabad, Nov. 15: B. Manoj Kumar and Md Shaibaz Tumbi of St Peter’s High School broke Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli’s world record stand of 664 runs when they hammered triple hundreds and were involved in an unbroken opening partnership of 721 runs in the Hyderabad Cricket Association’s under-13 cricket league championship at the Parade Grounds on Wednesday.

It was a massacre of the innocents as Manoj (320) and Shaibaz (324) went on a rampage sending the St Phillips High School bowlers to all parts of the ground to help their school register a massive 700-run victory. “I dedicate the triple hundred to Allah, my coaches, parents, brothers and sisters and particularly my driver Vijay Sharma, who sincerely drops and picks me up from practice everyday,” said Shaibaz, whose highest score had been 65 so far. Manoj said he was “thrilled to have broken my idol Sachin Tendulkar and elegant batsman Vinod Kambli’s record.” “I am ambitious but I did not think that I would get such a big knock. This has boosted my confidence and I will definitely break more records in time to come,” Manoj, whose best was 129 before this match, added.

That the youngsters garnered all those runs in only 40 overs speaks of the hapless opposition. With Manoj cracking 46 boundaries and Shaibaz walloping 57 fours the fielders had a harrowing time running after the ball. In fact, after sometime the fielders stopped chasing the ball. In fact, the St. Phillips players were so tired that when their turn came to bat they folded up for a mere 21 in 7 overs.

“Shaibaz, who is 12 years 9 months, has been desperate to impress the selectors after his younger brother Md. Shadaab represented the Andhra Pradesh in the National School Games Tournament,” said Shaibaz’s father Imtiaz Tumbi, who was India No. 3 in doubles in table tennis. Shaibaz Tumbi and Manoj Kumar are coached by Harish and Thyagesh and Abdul Bari Wahab.

“I never thought that I would get such a big knock, but as the innings progressed we knew that we could break Sachin and Kambli’s record,” said Shaibaz, whose idol is Yuvraj Singh. Shaibaz and Manoj said that the partnership has taught them that if you stay at the wicket the big knocks would come.

Manoj said: “We just planned to stay at the wicket for the 40 overs, but we never thought that we would break the world record.” Manoj said that his father, Simhachalam, who is an advocate, presented him with a puppy, “as I love pets a lot.” The duo have been inundated with congratulatory messages from relatives, friends, the principal and correspondent of the school and officials of the Hyderabad Cricket Association.

Both want to continue the good form while playing for the State and hopes to play for the country one day. The small wonders are also good at their studies. However, if given a choice, they would love to play cricket all the time. And as if to toast the exploits of these two batsmen pace bowler Md. Akram, turned in an excellent performance with the ball picking up 7 wickets for 11 runs in only 4 overs of which one was a maiden.

Brief scores: St. Peter’s High School 721 for no loss (B. Manoj Kumar 320 n.o. Md. Shaibaz Tumbi 324 n.o) beat St. Phillips 21 (Md Akram 7 for 11).
