Premier/Twenty20 League - Match Reports - Week 17 (Sep 10-11 2016)

FCCC@CSCCC: Premier game, Sept 11, 2016 - Reported by Abhay Natu(CSCC)

FCCC’s visit to Colorado Springs on Sunday, September 11th was considered a virtual playoff game, with the winner all but assured a spot in the playoffs and the loser to be relegated to fighting the crowd for that last spot.

CSCC won the toss and decided to bowl first. The game was delayed by 15 minutes due to a damp outfield. Before the start of the game, both the teams recognized the day that, 15 years ago, touched all our lives in one way or another. They took a moment to remember the victims of senseless violence all over the world and also those that put their lives on the line, keeping us out of harm’s way.

FCCC’s innings started in a less than ideal manner when they lost Shantanu Ghosh with no score and Faiq Majeed soon after. At 2/27, Omer Rafiq and Gopal Susarla took over and frustrated the CSCC bowlers for a session and a half. Omer put together a half century on the back of some big hits while riding his luck all the way into the third session.

With their regular bowlers finding no purchase, CSCC brought on Kervyn Dimney as a part-timer. Kervyn struck with his third ball, trapping Gopal in front. As has happened countless times before this day, the remaining partner of a long partnership fell just two balls later, victim of a spectacular running catch by Avinash Vataparambu on the line at midwicket.

CSCC capitalized on this opportunity, with Kervyn picking up a wicket every over and Avinash scoring a direct hit, to send FCCC reeling. After being 106/2, FCCC lost their next 8 wickets for 22 runs, Kervyn picking up a surprise fifer. Prasanna Damodaran and Narayan Madabusi picked up two each.

In response, CSCC started strong, with Kervyn looking to dominate the bowling early on. He fell soon, with score at 29. This was to be the highest partnership of CSCC’s innings. Their batters showed no intent at the crease and ended up walking back to pavilion one after another, no one able to reach double figures. Harpreet Singh showed some
resistance and positive intent but was soon picked up by the lone patroller at cow corner. More wickets followed with the old warhorse Dipal Patel taking four in short order. CSCC captain Narayan had been fighting since the first ball and showed no signs of giving up even as his team reeled towards an ignominious defeat.

At 70/8, CSCC’s last two wickets tried to make a fight of it, with Prasanna keeping company to Narayan for 13 runs and Abhay Natu battling it out for 22 more with Narayan. After fighting hard for more than a hundred balls and with victory in sight, Narayan chased a wide one only to drag it onto his stumps, ending a fantastic innings that almost took the match away from FCCC.

Man of the Match: Omer Rafiq(FCCC) was adjudged man of the match for his 65 runs and 3 wickets.
