2016 CTCL - T20 Weekly Report - Semi Finals

Denver Lions Vs Jaguars

Denver Lions won the toss and elected to field first considering the fact that the pitch was still wet from the overnight dew. Jaguars tried hard to avoid an early collapse similar to the previous week and started off on an overly cautious note. They could put only 11 runs in the first 5 overs by losing the lone wicket of Naveen. Lions bowled a very tight and tidy line. Antony struck twice for the Lions in the 6th over to remove Mrugesh and Ravi. Venky and Amit stuck together and stitched a solid partnership of almost 60 runs, with Venky smashing two 6’s and a 4 to accelerate the scoring towards the end. The dangerous Azim was struck in the abdomen on a full toss ball and had to retire hurt. Shanthi was caught at long on for a score of 0. The Jaguars’ tail wagged and put together almost 20 runs to take the score to 99. Antony finished with 3 wickets and Supi with 2 for the Lions.
The target of 99 was not going to be a cake-walk for the Lions and they need to preserve their wickets. However, Kuldeep and Shanthi started off on a very tight spell and the Lions were in trouble from the get go. The Lions lost 2 wickets in the 1st over when Vinay was c&b and Malikarjun was runout. Atul and Antony were sent home in the 3rd over from Kuldeep and the game seemed to slip out of the hands of the Lions. Shanthi had Mayank, the only Lions’ batsman to score double digits, caught by Manoj and then Suganth caught by Apurva in the 6th over. At the end of the 6th over, Lions were at 21/6. Venky had Bhagawati clean bowled on a Yorker and Pankaj got the wicket of Supi. Manoj cleaned up the Lions’ tail by claiming the wickets of Ram and Bala. Finally, the Lions inning folded for a score of 34 in the 11th over.
MoM: Venkatesh Deshpande (33 NO & 1-0-1-1)

Anchors Vs Challengers

Day: Sunny at Denver.
Toss: Won by Bharat from Anchors and decided to field first.
Anchors started with Sachin and Sujith as the opening bowlers and were quick to make in-roads into Challengers middle order with the first wicket falling in the 3rd over in form of Arun. Praveen was playing really well for Challengers but Prasad got him out caught and bowled on a ball which seemed to stop on him.Ahmed provided some resistance for Challengers but trying to increase the run rate nicked one to Das off the bowling of Soori. The rest of the batsman did not provide any resistance and challengers were 48/9 in 16.2 overs . The last pair added 14 runs to the score and ended up at 62/10.
Anchors started really badly again by losing the first 3 wickets for 36 runs on the board in 8.2 overs . Das top scored for Anchors with 28 runs in 34 balls. With 39 runs Anchors lost another 2 wickets in form of Das and Sujith . Dixit and Prasad made sure there were no more wickets lost and were able to chase the target in 14.3 overs .
Dixit was adjudged MOM with 14 runs not out and 1 wicket in 2.4 overs.
Both teams played the match in good spirit. Umpires too were very good with their decisions.

Cheetahs Vs CSU Rams

Cheetahs reached the Semi-Finals with an emphatic win at the Quarter Finals stage. The match was being played in Longmont and both teams were pumped up for the big match.
Cheetahs won the toss and elected to field first knowing CSU RAMS strength in chasing small totals due to their incredible bowling attack. Cheetahs started excellently pegging back CSU at the start with constant wickets and some very tight bowling by Deepak and Satyam. CSU RAMS did make a good comeback with the bat with Sagar Chandra making 38 runs. The target posted was 106 runs for Cheetahs to reach the Finals.
Cheetahs started off in excellent fashion with Rajesh (14) and Satyam (23) playing really well. CSU bowled well in the middle overs making it tough for Cheetahs but Pradeep (33) steered the ship to safety with some lusty blows by Viren at the end. Cheetahs reached the target with almost an over to spare.
Cheetahs won the Semi-Finals and Pradeep Naraharirao was named the Man of the Match for his 33 runs.

Scorpions Vs Spartans

It was sunny and beautiful afternoon and a perfect condition for a semi-final match between 2 well balanced sides in both batting and bowling. It was expected to be a thrilling and close contest between both the teams but Scorpions dominated young blood Spartans in bowling and fielding to win the match to reach finals.
Spartans won the toss and chose to bat first.
Innings 1:
Scorpions started bowling with their regular opening bowlers Chida and Abhishek and once again both gave exceptional start to Scorpions in a big semi-final. Chida bowled brilliant maiden first over to start the innings well. Abhishek also started well and took wicket of in-form batsman Sai Charan in second over. Danny did brilliant fielding to run out Spartans captain Prashanth to give another break through to Scorpions. Akhil showed some class and tried to play well to score some runs for Spartans but Scorpions continued to put pressure on Spartans with bowling and fielding. In fifth over Chida gave a huge breakthrough for Scorpions by taking wicket of dangerous batsman Chava Chaitanya to restrict Spartans to 3/13 in 5 overs. Akhil and Sandeep Lambu showed some resistance and tried to build a partnership and made sure no wickets were lost till break and they managed to score 3/33 in 10 overs. It was again Danny who fielded well and brilliantly throwed the ball to keeper to get another run out of Sandeep Lambu immediately after the break. That was the turning point for Scorpions to get match into their control. It was Satish turn and he did excellent bowling and took 4 Spartans wickets after the break to restrict them to very low score considering their team standards. He was unplayable and batsman had no clue about some balls. Praneeth and Vikram gave a very good support to him on the other end. Overall it was another disciplined bowling performance from Scorpions to bowl out Spartans in 17.5 overs for 69.
Innings 2:
Scorpions started their batting with regular openers Satish and Danny and Spartans started their bowling with Sandeep and Avinash. They both bowled very well with tidy overs and hinted Scorpions that it was not going to be an easy chase for them. Sandeep removed both openers in 3rd over to put pressure on Scorpions and in no time Scorpions were 9/4 in 6 overs and lost their captain Atif as well. Since it is a low score chasing, they were not worried about run rate and looking for a partnership from the batsman and there comes Mantha and Sudhir again who batted well in quarters and Scorpions were hoping that they will do it again. They both batted very sensibly to slow down the things and get the situation in their control and waited for bad balls. When Spartans were thinking match was is in their control, Mantha scored couple of sixes in Sai Charan and Shridhar DD bowling to accelerate the runs and covered the run rate to take Scorpions to 30/4 in 10 overs. With Scorpions just needing 36 runs in 10 overs, probably Spartans would have realized that they lost the match and it reflected after the break. Scorpions continued to score runs with odd boundaries and a healthy run rate. Scorpions lost Mantha wicket in 13th over but they were already in winning position by then and Sudhir took over the responsibility and scored runs with sensible batting and picking up the gaps and punishing the bad balls. Even though Scorpions lost few more wickets in the chase, Vikram made sure and scored a boundary in 18th over to score winning runs and give a victory for Scorpions to enter into finals. Since it was a tensed chase due to quick wickets in the beginning, it gave a huge relief for Scorpions they thumped up to celebrate the victory.
Satish Dhanekula was chosen Man of the match for his outstanding bowling spell. Mantha and Sudhir both also well deserved to be players of the match as their partnership gave victory to Scorpions.
Umpires did great job and there were no issues in the match.
