Twenty20 Div 1 FINALS Match Reports - Week 27 (30-Sep-1-Oct 2023)

-----------------------------------
TROPHY CHAMPIONSHIP (Top 4 Teams)
-----------------------------------

FINALS - RCC-Eagles vs LCC-Lions: Twenty20 – 2PM Sunday October 1st, 2023, at Green Valley Ranch, Denver - Reported by Kaushik Anand Natarajan(RCC-Eagles)

“The comeback is always stronger than the setback” – Unknown.

Division 1 T20 competitions in Colorado in the last few years have been quality personified and there have been several close games that have reduced the gaps between teams.
The 2023 season of Div1 T20 final was a testimony to the above statement. T20 is a game of uncertainty and when teams are brilliantly consistent with winning over uncertainty, they could be called champion teams. The top 4 teams in 2023 T20 Div1 at the end of league had staggering win rate of over 75% which shows the domination over uncertainty they showcased.

I had to spell this out because rightly the top 2 most consistent teams this season in T20 Div1 RCC Eagles and LCC Lions played the finals. To take you back to 2022, when these 2 teams met in the final LCC Lions won it handsomely. RCC Eagles ensured the setback was to be taken as opportunity to showcase strength.

“You don’t play for revenge; you play for respect and Pride” – Rahul Dravid

This game symbolized what it meant for both teams since they had won 1 game against each other in League stages and in Qualifier 1. Finals turned out to be a display of sportsmanship and cricketing skills, which was the real deal.

To jog your memory to what happened on the game day, it was an action-packed day of 2 mouthwatering clashes of Qualifier 2 followed by the Final. LCC Lions hosted FRCC Spartans at Cornerstone and won the Qualifier 2 with a solid finish. RCC Eagles hosted LCC Lions at Green Valley Ranch (GVR) in Denver for finals.

LCC Lions captained by Satyam Singh won the toss and was elected to bat. They opened the batting with the flamboyant opening pair of Dhiren Patel and Manjeet Inamdar. The duo has some memorable games against RCC Eagles in the last 2 seasons. Excitement was in the air at the venue where a contest was brewing up between the LCC Lions openers stacked against quality opening bowling of RCC Eagles in Shivraj Barik and Anup Reddy. 1st over of the game, the premier batsmen, Dhiren was hit by vicious bouncing ball from Shiv and had to retire out. In came LCC Lions skipper Satyam Singh who had plethora of experience playing at the venue and in crucial fixtures. Satyam and Manjeet stitched a formidable partnership for 1st wicket taking LCC Lions to 10 overs 71/0 at the water break. Some costly overs were curtailed by some amazing overs from Shiv and Surendar. There was lot of bounce off the pitch which was utilized by both these bowlers.

After the water break, LCC Lions lost their captain for a well made 44 of 36 balls with 2x4 and 2x6 striking at 122. Jay Pathak, who has been a class all-rounder for LCC joined Manjeet in the middle. They both added 35 runs to the tally. Jay’s classy on side flick to hit Rajdeep for a six was a treat to watch while Manjeet’s pure belligerence showcased unique batting styles.

Jay was dismissed for 9 runs and couldn’t score big. Dhiren returned to the middle after a concussion. Expectations were in the air for a revival of hitting masterclass, but it turned out to be a bowling masterclass from Rajdeep Dhaliwal who snatched 2 wickets of Jay followed by a bowled to get Manjeet out. Manjeet played good innings to set up the base for LCC Lions with 68 runs off 46 balls with 6x4s and 4x6s with a strike rate of 147.83. With 2 quick wickets, it was a great opportunity to tighten the screws to keep the final total down but incoming batsmen, Apurva Vartak had other plans. After playing a match saving innings in Qualifier 2, a few hours back the stage was set to play another crucial knock. Apurva hit 2 sixes back square of the wicket which set the tone for LCC Lions to put a big total on the board. Dhiren was dismissed after a good catch in long on by Srikanth Pulugurtha off a well delivered slower ball from Shiv. Rajdeep and Shiv ensured LCC Lions couldn’t accelerate further and delivered 2 splendid spells respectively with Shiv (4-1-21-1) @ Economy 5.25 and Rajdeep (4-0-32-3) @ Economy 8. LCC Lions completed 20 overs and set a target of 172 for RCC Eagles to chase.

The break was mixed emotions for both the sides at the innings break. The thought was the target could be stiff but needed good contributions at multiple stages. Water and Bananas came out and planning conversation began in the respective dugouts. Both teams chalked out the plans and it was going to be a treat for the viewing audience at the ground.

2nd Innings- RCC Eagles batting began with swashbuckling openers Vikesh Parmar and Satish Kanagala at the crease to face the ace opening bowler Dhiren Patel. After a cautious 1st over giving away only 3 runs, Vikesh took it upon himself to up the ante by scoring swiftly with the next 3 overs going for 35 runs. Vikesh hit multiple on side 6s and terrific offside six over covers to bring up these runs. Dhiren and Jay, who have been the mainstay of LCC Lions bowling over the years tried to tie down the scoring rate with 2 good overs in the middle. Vikesh scored 37 runs off 22 deliveries with 4x6s and 2x4s with a strike rate of 168. He got out of a full delivery from Vivek Arora who has been a great add to the LCC club recently.

Satish got out soon after, with a nick to Manjeet off Bhavya K. Satish K contributed 23 runs of 30 balls with 1x4s and 2x6s giving a steady 58-run partnership. Abhijit Das joined Kaushik at the crease but couldn’t carry on and got out trying to push the scoring rate up. RCC Eagles at 10 overs were 72/2. It was Even Stevens both teams at similar juncture in the respective batting innings.

After the break, Damion Robinson and Kaushik Karene began the crucial part of the run chase. Damion who has had great success in last 2 seasons was going to be the key batsmen. Kaushik Karene with an impressive debut season for RCC Eagles ensured his innings in the final was even more impressive with some counter-attacking shots played with suave and confidence. He hit 3 towering sixes to bring back RCC Eagles required RPO under control. Overs 13-14 brought back the momentum to the chasing side despite the wicket of Kaushik K who scored 29 runs of 14 balls with 3x6s striking at 207. RCC Eagles Vice Captain Shivraj Barik joined Damion in the middle and started sensibly with some strike rotation. In 17th over, Shiv showed some exquisite shots in his batting armory, a mid-wicket whack for a six and cut shot over third man for 6 utilizing the pace of Jay Pathak. Shiv scored 27 runs off 20 balls with 2x6s with a strike rate of 135. The batting duo finished off the run chase in a clean fashion with a straight six from Damion that brought RCC Eagles its first-ever T20 Div1 Championship.

Elation and hoorah broke out after six was hit. RCC Eagles and supporters sprang with joy and commendations were exchanged. The umpires for the game from Denver Dynamites CC, Surendar Reddy Lakkadi and Swaroop Reddy officiated the Finals with total commitment and handed over the Player of the Match to Damion Robinson for his stellar batting effort of 39 runs off 20 balls with 4x6s and 1x4s with a strike rate of 195.

Rohit’s 3rd over proved the turning point when it went for 21 runs, especially with a huge six by Bhavya. FRCC brought in Subhashish into attack and Apurva sent the ball out of the park by leveling the scores by hitting a flat 6 over covers.
