Twenty20 Div 2 Match Reports - Week 15 ( 8-9 July 2023)

CSCC Patriots @ LCC Panthers: T20 Division 2 – 1pm Sunday July 9th at Cornerstone Park, Littleton - Reported by Chandrasekhar Aluru(LCC-Panthers)

The CSCC Patriots were in 2nd place on the Div 2 points table with 10 points, having played more than ½ of their games. It has been their bowling that was able to contain opponents to modest or below-par totals in their wins. Their decision to let the LCC Panthers bat after they won the toss could be driven by the same belief.

Eugene and Raji opened for the Panthers, and after the first couple of overs went without much action, Samson Gill struck in the 3rd over, firing a yorker missile to break Raji’s middle stump. As Chandra replaced Raji, Eugene was getting warmed up. Did not take too long, though, when Prasanna was taken for 32 in his first and only over of the innings, 5th for the Panthers. That one over had 1, 6, 2, 4, 6, 6(nb), 6. The Panthers went from 26/1 from 4 overs to 58 after 5. The Patriots players were blinded due to overexposure to pure awesomeness (Kung Fu Panda reference).

Chandra was out LBW in the last over of the power play to Senthil after laboring to 5 off 9 balls.

The next over saw controversy when Nayab was given out by the umpires to what can, with a lot of generosity, be called a questionable claim for a catch by the fielder. The fielder covered a lot of ground running from long on to cow corner and took a diving catch, but the ball looked to have popped out of the fielder’s hands and fallen on the ground. The fielder claimed the catch anyway, but what gave away the claim was the highly muted celebration from the Patriots players. If it had been a clean catch, one would have expected the entire team to flock to the fielder. Even the fielder at the cover boundary, who was closest to the catcher and had a clear view of the action, was not very excited about the result. This incident had the potential of having a major impact on the target the Panthers would set, Nayab being the highest individual scorer and the sole centurion for the Panthers this season.

Adipt joined Eugene and the two took the score to 77 in the 9th over when Eugene, having just blasted his way to 52 off 21, got out trying to cut over the in-field, but managed to find the fielder at backward point. A rather meek end to a wonderful show of clean hitting. While the run rate was good, wickets were falling regularly and the Panthers innings was showing signs of losing steam. But Raj Chitikila and Advait kept the tempo going with a few lusty blows for six from Raj and steady 1s and 2s from Advait. The two had a partnership of 44. Raj contributed 27 to the final total of 147 at the end of 20 overs. Advait and Phani came in with useful contributions of 15 and 12.

The Patriots started with cautious aggression, with Charan and Prasanna playing within their limits. They went after loose balls and blocked the good ones. Prasanna got a life in the 3rd over of the innings when he got a full-toss and played a full-blooded on-drive to short midwicket only to be floored by Chandra. He made it count by scoring 34 from 35 balls, with 2 boundaries and two sixes on the way. Charan was the first to go, being run out by a brilliant direct hit from Advait who had only one stump from point. Aravind came and went, being bowled by Eugene for 5. While the Patriots had not lost too many wickets, runs were drying up, especially through boundaries. One reason for the slow down was Phani’s excellent spell where he kept the ball wide outside off and inviting the batters to drive, but they kept getting beaten for pace and swing. At the end of 10, the Patriots were at 57/2, well below the required. The pressure eventually got to Prasanna when he played a middle and off delivery across and was out LBW to Phani.

As the required run rate kept climbing, the big hitter Samson Gill arrived at the crease after the fall of Guru Prasad to a (super) slow delivery from Chandra. He immediately took to hitting boundaries scoring a 4 and a 6 in the same over. He kept taking his chances and got some clean hits out of the ground. He was also aided by two drop catches from Nayab and Chandra in the deep. He eventually got out trying to repeat his previous successes, after being caught at long-on, which was the first catch the Panthers as a team had taken after dropping 4 straight. The fall of his wicket was the final nail in the Patriots chase and their innings ended at 129/6. The Panthers bowlers all chipped in with economy or/and wickets, contributions coming from Advait and Raj with great economy and Phani (1), Eugene (1), Chandra (1), and Ben (2) with wickets.

Player of the Match: Eugene O’Brien with a brilliant 50 and economical bowling.

Scorecard: See CSCC-Patriots Vs LCC-Panthers Twenty20 Scorecard.

NEW MEXICO UNITED CC @ FRONT RANGE CC LEGENDS : TWENTY20 -D2- 9AM SUNDAY JULY 9TH 2023 AT LOWER GARDEN ACRES - LONGMONT- REPORTED BY VISHESH UMARANIA(NMUCC)

FRCC LEGENDS won the toss and elected to bowl first. The openers started cautiously and scored a conservative 34 runs for 1 wicket in the powerplay. This all changed as Ali Abbasi and Saaketh Desai started building a partnership. By the 10 over mark NMUCC were 60/2 and ready to put on a big total. After the break Abbasi went on the offensive smashing a fiery 80 of 40 balls with 8 sixes and 4 boundaries with Saaketh holding the other end. The FRCC LEGEND’S bowlers kept their cool and got the breakthrough with Manish MohanPurkar delivering a devastating yorker to get rid of the in-form Ali Abbasi. This lifted them and they bowled out NMUCC for 156 in 19.5 overs. The entire FRCC LEGENDS bowling unit picked up wickets with Hitesh Satelli and Rohan Jhaverri picking up 2 wickets a piece whilst being economical.

FRCC LEGENDS started their innings very carefully but the probing bowling of Murtaza Askari and Roshin Velutheri made it so that they couldn’t get a foothold in the game. They scored 30/3 at the end of 10 overs. With 126 runs needed the FRCC LEGENDS batters tried their best to hit them out of the park but due to the scoreboard pressure they succumbed to 107 for 9 in 20 overs losing by 49 runs. The pick of the bowlers were Roshin, Murtaza picking up 2 wickets a piece and Pavan for picking up 3 wickets.

Player of the Match: Ali Abbasi for his 40 ball 80 and catching 3 catches in the deep.

NEW MEXICO UNITED CC @ FORT COLLINS CC -B :TWENTY20-D2 - 1PM SATURDAY JULY 8TH 2023 AT LANCER MIDDLE SCHOOL - FORT COLLINS REPORTED BY VISHESH UMARANIA(NMUCC)

The toss was won by NMUCC and they elected to bat first. This turned out to be a poor decision with NMUCC losing 3 wickets for 21 runs by the end of the power play. The FRCC-B bowlers Manjinder Singh and Ramlal Karri bowled tight lines with strong field set ups. There was no reprieve for NMUCC in the middle overs as Mike Riley and Prasanth P bowled masterfully and economically leaving NMUCC at 47/4 after 10 overs. After the break the pressure continued from the FRCC-B bowlers with Mike and Ramlal picking up 2 wickets a piece and Ravi Sharma picking up 2 wickets in an over to prematurely end NMUCC’s innings for 90/10 in 18 overs. Throughout all the chaos Saaketh Desai batted a tenacious 35 of 41 balls.

FRCC-B started off cautiously as the NMUCC’ bowlers were very disciplined and only gave away 19 runs for 2 wickets in the power play. It seemed to be a bowler's afternoon as the conditions became overcast and a light drizzle began to pour. This made it so that runs were hard to come by and by the 10 over mark FRCC-B had 30 runs for 3 wickets. Aniruddha Savargaonkar and Prashanth P held the chase together with a 28 run partnership. Until the near miraculous innings by Rakha Kanumuri which was 24 runs of 12 balls almost finished the chase. The do or die attitude of the NMUCC bowling group prevailed as they were able to win by 2 runs at the end of 20 overs with Dharmesh Bhakta being the pick of the bowlers with figures of 4 overs, 5 wickets and 18 runs conceded.

Player of the Match: Saaketh Desai for his gritty 35 runs of 41 balls.

It was a perfect morning for a great game of cricket, Colorado yorkers won the toss and opted to bat first, The opening spell by the NMUCC bowlers Murtaza Askari and Dharmesh Bhakta rattled the top order leaving the Yorkers at 24/3 after the power play. NMUCC’s relentlessness exposed the Yorker’s batting leaving them 45/6 at the 10 over mark with Roshin Velutheri picking up 3 wickets. The Yorker’s fought hard with Deepak Appu top scoring 36 of 29 balls with 3 sixes and only losing 1 wicket to end the innings at 104/7.

With a target in mind the NMUCC’s openers started cautiously and once they got a few sighters turned it to the 5th gear with Dharmesh Bhakta smashing a ridiculous 86 of 36 balls comprising 9 sixes and 4 boundaries. This allowed NMUCC to chase the total down within 11 overs.

FCCC-B @ DYCA : T20, Sunday July 09, 2023 at Memorial Park Rose Bowl, Colorado Springs - Reported by Ravi Sharma(FCCC)

FCCC-B won the toss, and chose to bat on a sunny afternoon in the hopes of putting up a big total and end their ongoing points drought. The DYCA bowlers though, had other ideas and bowled with great discipline and purpose to never let the FCCC batsmen break free. Young Aarav Murthy in particular, despite his diminutive stature, stood the tallest as he drew great admiration from his opponents for his controlled leg spin and composure. At the end of 20 overs, DYCA restricted FCCC-B to 96-7, with Yugal Singham (25) and Ravi Sharma (18) being the main contributors for FCCC-B. Akhil Vegesna and Srihrudaya Nama took two wickets each, and the aforementioned Aarav one wicket for only 16 runs in his four overs.

Targeting 97, DYCA’s chase never got off the ground as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Only Ishwar Maraj was able to offer some resistance with his nearly run-a-ball 14, and once he got out to a well judged catch by Dheeraj Pulijala off the bowling of Mike Riley, the writing was on the wall. DYCA were all-out for 62 in 16.3 overs, with Dheeraj being the leading wicket taker (4 for 14). Mike Riley and Prasanth Prabhakaran chipped in with two wickets each.

Player of the Match: Dheeraj Pulijala For his four wicket haul, as well as the catch of Ishwar Maraj which sealed the game for FCCC-B.
